Common Plumbing Problems in Kingsport Homes
Kingsport's housing runs from historic downtown buildings to postwar brick homes in Lynn Garden, 1960s and 1970s ranches and split-levels in Colonial Heights, and newer subdivisions toward East Kingsport. Older postwar homes are where original galvanized steel supply pipe is most likely to turn up. It rusts from the inside, which shows as low pressure, brown water after the tap has sat, and fixtures that slowly lose flow.
Homes built between about 1978 and 1995 may have polybutylene pipe. It's usually gray but also came in silver, blue, white and black. Chlorine in city water slowly breaks it down from the inside, and it tends to fail without much warning. If your home is in that age range, have the supply lines checked.
Sewer lines are the other regular problem. Older lines crack, sag and collect tree roots. A backup into the lowest drain in the house, usually a basement floor drain or tub, is the classic sign. Kingsport has its own city water and sewer, so part of any backup is figuring out where the problem sits before anyone digs.
Signs You Need a Plumber, Not a Plunger
Some problems can wait for a normal appointment and some can't. Call right away if you have water running with no way to shut it off, a sewage smell or backup, no water to the whole house, or any smell of gas. For a gas smell, leave the house and call the gas company first. Everything else, such as a slow drain, a running toilet, a dripping faucet, or a water heater that runs out of hot water too fast, can usually be scheduled, but it rarely gets better on its own.
